Steve has practiced almost exclusively in the areas of healthcare regulatory/compliance and the defense of medical liability and malpractice claims. In addition to his technical legal experience, because he has worked almost exclusively with hospitals, physicians and other healthcare providers, he has an intimate understanding of the specialized issues they confront, including those related to legal compliance, reimbursement, and liability risk concerns. He is able to communicate well with providers regarding their available legal options and which are best suited to their particular clinical and business goals and needs.
Steve has served as healthcare counsel for hospitals, several prominent medical specialty groups, and billing, coding and practice management companies. He has drafted numerous corporate compliance plans and serves as a member of and counsel to numerous compliance committees. This work includes providing general day-to-day compliance advice as well as leading the internal investigations of billing and claims submission concerns, including potential False Claims Act violations. He is currently very active in educating and assisting numerous providers and healthcare associations regarding the HIPAA privacy, security and electronic transaction requirements. In addition, he continues to defend healthcare providers in medical malpractice claims. While he primarily services clients located throughout Idaho, he also works with several clients in Oregon and Washington.
Steve is a member of the American Health Lawyers Association, the American Bar Association’s Health Care Law Section, the Defense Research Institute, including its Medical Liability Committee, and he is a founding member of the Idaho State Bar’s Health Law Section. He regularly attends national conferences focusing on healthcare regulatory issues and frequently lectures at health law and malpractice defense seminars through Idaho and the region. |
